A Bit of Recent History: Carlo Mariotti, the ìMarble Manî 1928-2004 (of Mariotti & Figli, a fourth generation marble company in Tivoli), may be considered one of the best stone artisans of his time. Mariotti masonry was prominently used in Chicago's Sears Tower, New York's Lincoln Center, Beijing's new Bank of China headquarters. In Los Angeles, it can be found at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, sheathing the Getty Center, the Italian Cultural Institute in Westwood (Patio Mariotti), and the entire exterior of the new UCLA Replacement Hospital-partly donated in recognition of its many efforts to save Mariotti's life. He died in 2004. Mariotti devised "a guillotine-like machine ("It makes the French Revolution look like nothing") that split blocks along their bedding planes. The technique created the rough finish Meier [Getty architect] wanted, with an unexpected bonus: It revealed many more fossils ñ leaves, feathers and shells ñ than would be seen in normal banded, polished travertine. [Ö] When the Getty complex opened in December 1997, architectural reviews were mixed, but the stone got mostly high marks. To this day, visitors seem compelled to trace the outlines of the fossils with their fingers."
