Introduction to Studying Italian in the Greater Los Angeles Area

The following pages provide a guide to the study of Italian language and culture in the Los Angeles area: university departments offering degrees in Italian, community and city colleges, language institutes, high schools, and elementary schools. Information regarding language tutors and miscellaneous other courses such as cooking, opera, traditional music, also follow. The Education Office of the Consular office promotes the study of Italian language and culture within this jurisdiction.

Fondazione Italia is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of promoting the teaching and learning of the Italian language and culture across the Southwestern United States. It receives grants from the government of Italy in support of its mission, and it is governed by a volunteer board whose members have backgrounds in education, engineering, philanthropy, law and business. They have been successful in introducing the Italian into public and private schools and have supported the introduction the Advanced Placement (AP) test in Italian as part of the Standardized Aptitude Test (SAT). Italian classes for children and adults are offered in Burbank, Irvine, Redondo Beach, Los Feliz, West Los Angeles and Casa Italiana.

Fondazione Azzurra is another non-profit organization, founded in Los Angeles in 2006, for the purpose of preserving and promoting the study of the Italian language and culture throughout Southern California. It assists in the establishment and maintenance of Italian language educational programs in private and public schools.
