So many Italian pleasures revolve around food and leisureóin combination. While the local coffee shop (caffË or bar) is a vital part of Italian life, the custom of taking a long amble on a Sunday afternoon, the passeggiata, would not be complete without a gelato (Italian ice cream) in hand. While espresso is now everywhere on the Los Angeles scene, authentic, intensely flavorful, artisanal gelato (ice cream and sorbet) is harder to find. Frequently gelato is on the dessert menu of Italian restaurants (made inhouse), and it is increasingly available in supermarkets (e.g., Whole Foods, Vicente Foods).
