Coffee

Coffee = CaffË

See: FOOD & RESTAURANTS

Espresso (that's with an "s" not an "x"), long known as Italy's contribution to coffee connoisseurship, is now ubiquitous in southern California, available with more or else authentic taste. And although cafÈ (=Italian caffË ) culture is on the rise, it cannot match the "bar" (Italian term for a caffË ) life so prevalent in Italy and so loved by tourists. Whether catching a quick espresso or cappuccino and brioche (=croissant), literally at the bar, as a quick breakfast before heading off to work, or whether stopping to have an aperitif with a friend later in the afternoon, the caffË or bar is a staple of life in Italy and a key site on its social landscape. Starbucks, Pete's, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and a plethora of other chain coffeehouses, however are making an impact on our southern California lifestyle. Italian caffË here in the Southland, sometimes have become eateries (besides serving espresso), and sometimes function as Italian style bars. With the widespread use of Italian coffee makers, good Italian espresso can be enjoyed in most upscale and even modest restaurants throughout the city. But watery espresso is still too frequent for those used to drinking a denser Italian coffee "come si deve" (which is just right). And if you are like one of the thousands of southern Californians who now have Italian espresso makers at home, you can even have one of Italyís favorite coffees delivered to your door through a subscription service:

Pasquini: "Los Angeles' first family of espresso."
"Enter Pasquini, the youngest member of Los Angeles' first family of espresso, a clan that has been selling espresso machines for homes and businesses and running coffeehouses for almost 50 years. In 1960 he opened his second store, Via Veneto, on the Sunset Strip. "It was the start of that whole beatnik coffee shop era," he says, and America was enjoying its first espresso awakening. Pasquini began importing Faemas, becoming, he says, the first distributor of commercial espresso machines in this country. (Previously, individual purchasers had brought machines over, just as he had with his first one.) He opened his first Pasquini coffee shop at the downtown Bullocks on St. Vincent Court in 1962 and another one nearby, at 7th and Hope, shortly thereafter. He branched out into Orange County in 1967, opening a Pasquini at the South Coast Plaza mall. Managed by his brother, all three of those shops ran for more than 20 years." Abstract, read more from: "The cream of caffÈ; A machine that makes a well-nigh perfect cup is just the latest in the Pasquini family's L.A. espresso ventures," by Russ Parsons, Los Angeles Times, Mar 9, 2005, p.F.10:
