Settimana della Lingua Italiana Italian Language Week): The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promoted an Italian language week throughout the world, since 2001, as an initiative of the prestigious national Linguistic Academy, líAccademia della Crusca In 2006, 1,300 events were held in 80 countries. Each year the week is organized around a theme (e.g., Italian language and the sea, food, language arts; in 2008 the theme is Italian language and the piazza or public space). It is coordinated by the líAccademia della Crusca, by the Dante Alighieri Society, and by the national Television and Radio Network, RAI, under the aegis of the President of the Italian Republic. It is normally held at the end of October.
Los Angeles Italian Week: During the first weeks of June, to coincide with the Festa della Repubblica, June 2 [see CELEBRATIONS, civic], the Consulate General of Italy, in conjunction with other institutions, organizes a series of events to promote Italian accomplishments in culture, science, commerce and tourism in Los Angeles.
International Womenís Day (March 8.): The Istituto Italiano di Cultura normally holds a program relating to womenís issues on Womenís Day, a celebration much observed in Europe but barely noticed in the U.S. Yellow acacia flowers (mimosa) are given in observance of this day.
